Trial Work Experience
TWE
Trial Work Experience (TWE) provides individuals with disabilities the opportunity to explore their abilities in a real, integrated work setting. This short-term, unpaid experience helps assess whether a client is eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) services and what types of support may be needed to succeed in employment. TWE is tailored to each client’s unique strengths, needs, and employment goals. Together with the VR Counselor and service provider, clients help develop a personalized plan to guide the experience.
The trial work takes place in actual job environments, either within the community or at a provider’s facility, depending on what is most appropriate. Throughout TWE, clients receive the necessary support, which may include help understanding tasks, accommodations, or modified equipment to meet individual needs. Employment specialists and job coaches work closely with each client, providing guidance and encouragement. Progress is carefully monitored and shared with the VR Counselor to help determine the next steps toward achieving meaningful, long-term employment. Success in TWE is a team effort that relies on the client’s commitment and collaboration with the professionals supporting them.
Work Adjustment Training is designed for individuals who need preparation before entering the workforce. This training focuses on teaching the essential work readiness skills—sometimes called soft skills or employability skills—that are necessary for obtaining and maintaining employment. These skills include effective communication, managing stress and disability symptoms, understanding workplace expectations like attendance and punctuality, learning job duties, responding to supervision, maintaining stamina and pace, and developing problem-solving abilities.

Each client’s training plan is personalized based on their unique needs and goals, developed collaboratively with their VR Counselor and service provider. Training takes place in an integrated and supportive setting where accommodations and modified materials are provided as needed to ensure success. Clients receive ongoing feedback and encouragement to help build confidence and improve workplace skills.

Throughout the training, progress is regularly monitored and discussed with the client and VR Counselor to ensure the goals are being met. The program emphasizes a supportive environment tailored to each client’s cultural and communication needs, including sign language or other language supports if necessary. Success in Work Adjustment Training requires active participation and dedication from the client, supported by professionals committed to helping them achieve meaningful employment.
